A Volunteer’s Life Comes Full CircleTo look at Yvonne now, you would never know she had suffered the heartache of a broken marriage. You would never guess she had experienced the devastation of an abortion. To know this, you would have to become one of the volunteers Yvonne leads as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Then, as she reminds you of the importance of your work, you would have a chance to hear her story. At the young age of 20, Yvonne found herself separated from her husband, the mother of a six-month-old baby boy and pregnant again. Although Yvonne was a Christian, she visited an abortion clinic with her estranged husband and aborted her second child. She justified her decision because of the shame of not knowing whether the baby was his or was fathered by a boyfriend she was seeing at the time and the pressures of single parenting. Although Yvonne and her husband reconciled, the marriage ultimately failed. Yvonne’s heart was consumed with guilt and pain from both a failed marriage and an abortion that continued to haunt her. But God began to orchestrate events in Yvonne’s life that would bring about her healing. As her relationship with the Lord blossomed, so did romance with a wonderful Christian man. They married and Yvonne was blessed with two more children. Slowly, Yvonne began to open up to others about her past. It wasn’t long before a friend’s teenage daughter discovered she was pregnant. Yvonne was able to speak peace to both this young woman and mother, counseling them from the pages of her own life. As a result, this young woman gave birth to a baby who is now 15-years-old! Yvonne’s story also touched the life of a neighbor who was a social worker. As Yvonne befriended her, this woman accepted Christ and then told Yvonne about the work of the Crisis Pregnancy Centers. She suggested Yvonne attend a volunteer training session that month. She has been sharing her story and her talents with the Crisis Pregnancy Centers ever since. Today, Yvonne is our Volunteer Coordinator, training our volunteers, coordinating schedules, and offering encouragement to staff and clients alike. “My whole world changed as a result of coming to the Crisis Pregnancy Centers,” Yvonne explains. “I found healing and am able to offer it to others through this ministry. “The clients here are my heart and have been for 11 years now,” she continues. “The Lord used the ashes of my past to lead me into volunteering for the Crisis Pregnancy Centers. First Corinthians 15:10 assures us, ‘By the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain… yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.’” Yvonne’s life has come full circle… a miracle she thanks God for every day.
